What the critics are saying about A Kind of Self – “absorbing … an engrossing story”. (Kirkus Reviews)

A Kind of Self by M.B. Treowmian is a novel series about the terrifying void at the heart of the glamorous and sophisticated jet-set world. It tells the story of Pascale, a redoubtable journalist who is desired for her beauty, but is most remarkable for her tender sensibility and devastating charm.

Pascale’s fortitude is tested in New York nightclubs and at the contemporary art fair in Miami where she encounters various males. Slaht is a cunning misogynist who seduces women to capture a trophy. Kratzer is an emotionally stunted hedge fund manager who clumsily strives for intimacy with women.

Unwanted male attention threatens female dignity wherever a woman might go. But Pascale glimpses a better world apart from the mainstream and its conventional pursuit of money, power, and expedient pleasures – she sees her values and existence affirmed in the unconventional attitudes of a different way of life.

A Kind of Self is published by Glaux Press and is out soon.

Advance praise for A Kind of Self:

A Kind of Self is “absorbing” and “an engrossing story” that "examines the sometimes-sordid relationships and dalliances among affluent New Yorkers at the Miami art fair,” and “opens and closes discussing romantic love.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“I came for the story of a precocious young woman coming of age in the glamorous jet-set milieu of New York, and stayed for the life-changing spiritual exercises and the edifying lessons of ancient philosophy.” (Henry Sloan, lyricist)

Discover a place of splendor and treachery, enter the life beautiful and terrible – read A Kind of Self.

Explore the unimaginably hedonistic world of the super-rich. Marvel at the absurd spectacle of glamour and sophistication.

“Collection of Bodies” is Book One in the novel series A Kind of Self, by M.B. Treowmian. It leaps immediately into the high-flying, maximum-luxury world of the super-rich, with narrated wisdom that sees both the glittery appeal and the sinister heart of this strange world.

A Kind of Self draws the reader into the thrill of the jet set, as characters journey from the urban rush of New York nightlife to the parties of cultured collectors at the Miami art fair – and on to Paris and its old-world museums and hotels, and the paradise of yachts visiting secluded beaches of the hidden coves and calanques of the Mediterranean.

There is one woman at the center of the glittering tableau where human existence itself unfolds. Pascale is the dashing journalist who is committed to her principles and life purpose. But she is haunted by her own beauty for which she is envied by women and desired by men. Pascale bears the burden of unwanted, perfidious male attention, and has lost faith in true love.

The clash of characters turns around Pascale: The rich man, who clumsily pursues love in his cocoon of luxury and status, and leaves a spectacular trail of unfulfilling dalliances. The terrifying playboy, who is capable of only pure malevolence for the women he seduces, seeing them as a soldier sees an enemy position, it must be destroyed. And the odd man out, the jovial archaeologist, Peels. The novel series A Kind of Self continues Peels’ story in Book Two, as he stumbles into the hedonistic world of the rich. Entangled in their struggles of wanton power and diminished compassion, Peels finds himself far from his natural habitat of a dig site and its remnants of Iron Age civilization, far from the habitus that uncovers the secrets of ancient temples and sacred rituals.
